Celebrating 100 Years Of Ladybird Books

(c) Ladybird Books Ltd, 1958

Ladybird By Design

Explore the social and design history of over 120 original Ladybird illustrations, dating back from the 1950s to the early 1970s at the House of Illustration.

Rare photographs and correspondence are featured in this exhibition; you’ll also be able to take part in classic craft activities, workshops and talks.

  • The first Ladybird book was made by the printers Wills & Hepworth
  • The ladybird logo was first registered back in 1915
  • The original 4.5 x 7” hardback books, sold at 2/6d for almost 30 years
  • Early books had 24 illustrations with 56 pages, made on one sheet of paper which was folded and cut to size.

  • This method helped during rationing and enabled them to be sold cheaply
  • Ladybird books have now been translated into over sixty languages
