The Sweeney - The Complete First Series

The moment Regan (John Shaw) said that famous line, “We're The Sweeney, son, and we haven't had any dinner,” the nation fell in love with The Sweeney and it became an instant hit.

The Sweeney was based on the real life Flying Squad, who actually dated back to the 1920s.

It was the cockney criminal community who cheekily came up with the cockney rhyming slang alternative for The Flying Squad as Sweeney Todd and that's how the show got its name.

Filming started in 1973 by Euston Films. Thames commissioned the pilot and a 13 part series and it was broadcast on the 4th June 1974.

The show proved such a hit that stars were lining up to play parts including Diana Dors, John Hurt, George Cole, Morecambe and Wise, Lynda Bellingham and Janet Ellis.

Ironically Ray Winstone, who later went on to play Regan in The Sweeney 2012 film, played an extra that was meant to be killed off, but he managed to escape and so they decided to keep it in.

So if you weren't around to watch it first time round, you can transport yourself back to Seventies London courtesy of The Sweeney whenever you want.

The Sweeney - The Digitally Restored Complete First Series is available on (Blu-ray) and (DVD).
