York's Chocolate Story

Since York's Chocolate Story first opened their doors, they have become a favourite place to visit for chocoholics.

York's Chocolate Story tells the tale of all the sweets and treats that came from York and you'll be surprised to learn how many of your favourite chocolates and sweets actually come from there.

Rowntree's produced Kit Kat, Smarties, Aero, Rolo, Fruit Pastilles, Fruit Gums, Polo and black magic.

Rowntree's has since gone through many changes becoming Rowntree Mackintosh in 1969 and from 1988 Nestle Rowntree. They still operate a chocolate factory in York today.

Craven first produced Sugared Almonds and Mint Humbugs back in 1822.

Today they are owned by the York-based company Tangerine and specialise in retro sweets like Fudge, Pear Drops and Sherbets.

Terry's was originally founded by Joseph Terry in the 19th century.

Today they are owned by Kraft and the factory is closed, but they still produce Chocolate Orange today.

Visitors are in for a real chocolate treat as you will get an interactive tour of York’s confectionery heritage by a team of storytellers.

Other areas of interest include displays and exhibitions based on the most iconic chocolates and sweets, chocolate tastings, chocolate-making demonstrations and you can even get to design your own chocolate bar wrapper.

Make sure you pop into The Chocolate Bar Café for a hot chocolate and brioche and for you series chocoholics try their chocolate shots.

Don't forget to treat yourself to some rare chocolate gifts and treats from their shop, before you go home.
