A Family In Wartime Exhibition
When Germany declared war on Britain in September 1939, life would never be the same again for the Allpress family.
Using first hand audio accounts and family photographs from the Allpress family, this exhibition told the story of William & Alice Allpress and their ten children during the outbreak of war.
“War broke out on a Sunday, I was evacuated…big double decker buses, the red double decker buses, masses of them outside the school,…I just couldn’t understand it, why have I got to leave my family?.”
John Allpress, 10 years old when he and his classmates were evacuated
Also on display were everyday households items used such as, cookery books offering advice on how to cook with limited rations. The government encouraged families with gardens to grow their own vegetables and they used posters to illustrate this.
A model of 69 Priory Grove, South London was on display, so you could peek inside their home to see how they lived.
